Postural and Corrective Exercise

Postural and Corrective Exercise

At Alex Allan Integrated we understand the importance of good posture in the avoidance of injury and decreased function. We see countless people with hunched shoulders, rounded backs, and heads that sit two or more inches forward from their spines. We see these people walking, running, sitting, and lifting weights on a daily basis. The result is shoulder, neck, and lower back pain that could have been avoided. This is only one example of postural dysfunction: there are many more. From chronic muscle strains in the calfs and hamstrings, to sore knees and sciatic pain; it can often be traced back to poor posture.

Why? In the human body there are some muscles and that are prone to tightness and others prone to weakness. As the tight ones get tighter; the weak ones get weaker. At AAI we perform a full assessment of these muscles, determine which specific muscles need stretching and which need strengthening, and design a program based on the results. Our program is designed to specifically correct the client's posture in minimal time, and reduce chronic pain in the process. Our programs also include advanced methods of correction that target the connective tissues (fascia) as well as the muscles; creating a global relaxation of the body prior to stretching. This accelerates the process of muscle lengthening far more effectively than stretching alone.

Once the static posture has improved, we reintegrate the client back into dynamic movement patterns (a squat for example); training the same pattern without restriction of motion by the tight muscles, or insufficiency by the weak muscles. Injury and chronic pain declines, while power and balanced muscular development increases.
